Pre-Conference Session: Training & Supervising Your Professional Advising Staff

I am excited to bring you all a session specific to training and developing your advising staff. If you’re like me, you moved into a supervisory position with little (or no!) training on strategies for onboarding, training, or supervising professional staff. In our time together, we will have the opportunity to explore both theory and practice. We’ll review supervisory models and strategies, but also share resources and tools that we’ve picked up along the way. There will be time for some self-reflection and individual planning, but the session will also be interactive. We will be able to collaborate to create partnerships and a network of other supervisors so that we can continue to connect after the conference.

Since training and supervision truly begin during the hiring process, we will discuss strategies that you can employ to evaluate fit and begin the process of acculturation during the hiring process. We will review strategies that you can employ during the hiring/onboarding process, then move through training (developing specific plans), and supervising strategies. Of course, there are interpersonal and institutional challenges in these processes and we’ll dig into some of those in order to discuss solutions. Participants will leave the session with actionable strategies, ideas for implementation back at work, and a support network for the coming year.

I am looking forward to working with the group!

Nina
