Lisa Fleming has been an advisor for the Liberal Studies in Early and Elementary Education (LSEE) Program at Virginia Commonwealth University since 2011 and was promoted to the assistant director of the program in 2014. Prior to joining the VCU Rams faculty, she worked in the public school system, teaching 5th and 6th grades in New Jersey and Virginia. Lisa works with the nearly 500 undergraduate pre-service elementary education teachers. She also manages the LSEE Peer Advising Program, teaching up to three courses each semester – peer advising training and foundation and advanced leadership studies. The College of Humanities and Sciences presented her with its Excellence in Advising Award in April 2013, and she was also recently selected as the 2015-16 Excellence in Advising in the Primary Role award winner at Virginia Commonwealth University. Lisa serves as chair for the Undergraduate Academic Advising Board (UAAB) and faculty advisor for the Rainbow Educators organization. She holds a Bachelor of Science in Elementary Education and an MEd in Education Leadership from Salisbury University.
Advising
Administrator – Dr. Kimberly Smith, Virginia Tech
Dr. Kimberly S. Smith joined Virginia Polytechnic Institute
and State University in 1999 and serves as the Director of Undergraduate
Advising and the University Academic Advising Center. Her primary
responsibility in this position involves directing the University Studies
department which is the academic “home” for students who are undecided about a
major or want to explore a variety of degree programs before selecting a
major. In addition, Dr. Smith provides leadership and coordination for
university-wide programs and initiatives related to enhancing academic advising.
She is responsible for developing, implementing, monitoring, and assessing
academic advising activities throughout the university community through
administrative collaborations with the academic colleges, the University
Academic Advising Center, and various other university stakeholders in support
of undergraduate education.
New Advisor –
Leanna Arnold, Temple University
Leanna Arnold is an Associate Academic
Advisor in the Academic Resource Center (ARC) at Temple University. She
primarily advises a caseload of undeclared students within the Division of
University Studies, students in transition, and visiting international students
through Temple’s Global Programs. Leanna began her advising career as an
undergraduate student working as a peer advisor in ARC. Upon graduation,
she was hired as a professional advisor and recently celebrated her two-year
anniversary. This May, Leanna will earn her M.Ed. in Adult &
Organizational Development. Leanna enjoys co-teaching First Year Seminar
courses and sharing her wealth of first-hand knowledge about Temple with her
students. Leanna co-founded the New Advisor Subcommittee and Advisor
Social Series through Temple’s Academic Advisor Group to serve as a support
system for advisors. Her philosophy is that there is a ripple effect that
occurs when advisors feel supported and have strong networks, so they in turn
have a higher capacity to support their students. Because of her
exemplary work with students and her contributions to advising, Leanna was also
selected as the 2015 Outstanding New Advisor award winner at Temple University.
Advising Advocate – Diana Gruendler, Penn State University
Diana R. Gruendler is entering her 15th year at the
Pennsylvania State University. She is a Senior Lecture in the Department
of English and lead faculty for the College of the Liberal Arts online degrees
- Law and Society, Letters, Arts, and Sciences and Integrated Social Sciences.
In this capacity she works closely with the College of the Liberals Arts
Filippelli Institute for e-Education and Outreach and the World Campus Academic
Advisers.
Contribution to
Scholarship – Dr. Janet Schulenberg, Penn State University
Dr. Janet Schulenberg is Associate Director for
Curriculum and Technology in the Division of Undergraduate Studies at Penn
State University, University Park. She has published extensively on academic
advising, and served in national leadership roles in NACADA as chair of the Research
Committee and chair of the Commission on the Theory, Philosophy, and History of
Academic Advising.
Jeff Gardner
Memorial Scholarship – Tania Alvarez, Old Dominion University
Tania B. Alvarez is a certified Master Advisor at Old
Dominion University. As a student success advisor for the ODU Batten College of
Engineering and Technology for the past 5 years, Ms. Alvarez coordinated
student success efforts to fulfill the Engineering Fundamentals Division
mission of providing students with all the necessary tools to attain their
engineering degree and be successful in the process. She managed a 380+ student caseload, planned
and implemented programs and workshops related to academic success and
retention, co-led new student Freshman and Transfer orientations, and assisted
at-risk students in achieving academic success. Because of her outstanding
work, the College presented her with its Excellence in Advising Award in April,
2014 and was also recently selected as the 2014-15 Excellence in Advising in
the Primary Role award winner at Old Dominion University. She recently assumed
the position of Coordinator of Transfer Advising and Articulation in the Office
of Advising and Transfer Programs at ODU. Alvarez serves as Co-Chair for the
Old Dominion Advising Network (ODAN), and Co-Advisor for the Society of
Hispanic Professional Engineers (SHPE) student chapter. She holds an
undergraduate degree in Psychology from Denison University, and a MA in
Counseling from Regent University.

Administrator, Jane Emery, Penn State York
With an educational background in social work and
counseling, Jane has been serving as Director of Advising and Career
Development and Coordinator of the Division of Undergraduate Studies (DUS) at
Penn State York for the past ten years. Prior to this, she worked as a DUS
Adviser. The unit, Advising and Career
Development, integrates academic advising with career development and is housed
within Academic Affairs. This model works very well at the York campus and
this combination is key to the identity of the unit and one of the reasons it
is so effective and relevant on campus. As an administrator, Jane has the
opportunity and responsibility to educate, advocate for and direct the future
of academic advising at the campus and the University. She feels very fortunate
to do good work in the academic advising and career development field within an
environment of support and collegiality. Education empowers people to live
better lives and having the opportunity to enhance the learning experiences of
students, is both rewarding and challenging.
Being in a position to study and advance the field of academic advising
and direct its future is something she fully embraces.

Administrator – Dr. Rory McElwee, Rowan University
Dr. McElwee serves as Associate Vice President for
Student Retention, Division of Strategic Enrollment Management at Rowan
University in Glassboro, NJ. Since 2012, Rory has led Retention offices,
services, and programs at Rowan University, including academic advising, degree
completion initiatives, first-year experience programs, access admissions
programs, transfer services, early alert & intervention, testing, tutoring,
and developmental education with a staff of 50 dedicated professionals.
Prior to entering administration full-time, she founded Rowan's Office of
Academic Transition Programs to provide a coordinated approach to transition
support programs on campus. She was a faculty advisor and Psychology
professor at Rowan and other institutions from 1995-2012. Rory holds a BA
in Psychology from Drew University and a PhD in Personality & Social
Psychology from Cornell University.

– Ananda Newmark, Virginia Commonwealth University
Ananda Newmark is the Baccalaureate Social Work Program
Director in the School of Social Work at Virginia Commonwealth University.
New Advisor –
Megan Kately, Rowan University
As
the first University Advising Services advisor embedded in an academic
department at Rowan University, Megan has helped to define the embedded
advisor’s role by providing consistently outstanding and proactive advising to
students while advocating for their needs to the academic department.
During her two years advising for Psychology students, she has developed and
implemented a classroom presentation system to deliver program requirements and
advising assistance to all students in the major, helped to start a student
organization of peer advisors to assist with resources and student connection
to the department, assisted with the development of Welcome Receptions for new
students, and provided unprecedented levels of assistance to new transfer
students. In Fall 2015, Megan developed and implemented the first
Transfer Learning Community on campus and successfully helped integrate a group
of new transfers to the Psychology Department and the University
community. Megan holds a Bachelor of Arts in Psychology from Penn State
University and a Master of Arts in Counseling in Educational Settings from
Rowan University.
New Advisor – Jeffrey Kurz,
Ocean County College
Jeffrey is currently the Supervisor for Student Services
at the Southern Education Center of Ocean County College in Manahawkin, NJ,
overseeing academic advising, student activities, graduate interns, and work
study students. He works with a dynamic team of professionals dedicated to
providing off-campus programs and services to students. Jeffrey’s areas of
interest include adult development and learning, first year student
transitions, veterans affairs, and the one stop shop method to student
services. His passion for higher education is deeply rooted in the authentic
stories of students and helping them to succeed. Jeffrey earned his M.A. in
Higher Education Administration from Rowan University in 2013 and his B.A. in
Psychology from William Paterson University in 1998.
