Region 2 Award Winners!!!


Outstanding Advising Award Winner - Faculty Advising
Janice Hawkins, Old Dominion University

Janice Hawkins, RN, MSN is the Chief Academic Advisor for the School of Nursing at Old Dominion University. Janice has worked at Old Dominion University as an adjunct and full time nursing faculty since 2000 but assumed the faculty advising role in 2010. She advises traditional prelicensure nursing students as well as distance learning degree completion students. To better serve in this role, she has completed her Master Advisor Certification as well as the Global Certificate program for working with international students. She routinely participates in workshops and training to increase her knowledge of student resources and to develop relationships across campus and beyond.  


Outstanding Advising Award Winner - New Advisor
Stephanie Graves, Temple University

Stephanie Graves' passion for student success and academic advising was ignited during her undergraduate studies at the University of Akron where she had the opportunity to work with student athletes.  She continued her education at Akron, pursuing her graduate degree in Higher Education Administration where she was able to continue her experience in student services by working as the Coordinator of the NCAA CHAMPS/Life Skills program for UA Athletics.  After graduation, Stephanie moved to the Philadelphia region where she started working as an Academic Advisor at Temple University's Fox School of Business.  At Fox, Stephanie demonstrated her commitment to student success by developing a comprehensive retention program for business students called the Fox Future Leaders.  During her first two years of working at Temple, Stephanie also revamped the transfer orientation program, helped facilitate a university-wide Virtual Advising initiative, and has presented at local and state professional advising conferences.  As a new mother of twins, Stephanie enjoys spending time with her daughters, Harper and Hudson, and her wife, Katherine. She is also an avid runner, musician, and cookie baker.  Stephanie is honored to be recognized for her dedication to academic advising and is very excited to be attending the NACADA Region 2 Conference in Lancaster, PA.


Outstanding Advising Award Winner - Advising Primary Role
Brad Pearson, Temple University

Brad Pearson grew up just outside of Washington, DC and attended both undergraduate (College of William and Mary, B.A. in history) and graduate (James Madison University, M.Ed in counseling psychology and college student personnel administration) institutions in Virginia. While at JMU, he had the opportunity to advise students on academic success strategies, career and major exploration, study abroad opportunities, and class registration. This experience led him to the Honors Program at Temple University--a job Brad relishes for the opportunity to work with such talented and ambitious students and colleagues. He particularly enjoy building the community within Honors through programs such as the Honors Peer Mentor Network which he started in fall 2011. Brad is honored to be recognized by his peers at Temple and in NACADA!
