Region 2 Excellence in Advising-Advising Administrator
Richard Mayo
Old Dominion University
Trey Mayo currently serves as the first director of advising for the Career and Advising Resource Center (CARC) in the Darden College of Education and Professional Studies at Old Dominion University. He was involved with the establishment of a new advising center in the college’s new academic building. Mayo’s office works with undergraduate students in a variety of majors and certain graduate teacher education programs. CARC enjoys taking different approaches to serving students through “unconventional advising.” Previously, he was the academic advisor and program manager for the Department of Modeling, Simulation and Visualization Engineering at ODU where he was involved with the establishment of the department infrastructure and operations, and was also involved in the successful ABET accreditation process for the first B.S. program in the country in modeling and simulation engineering. He has also worked with the Interdisciplinary Studies – Teacher Preparation program and the Bachelor of Arts in International Studies program at ODU. Mayo is involved with numerous campus activities including commencement, the Faculty/Staff Alumni Club, and the Association of University Administrators. A Norfolk native, Mayo earned a B.A. in communication and an M.S.Ed. in educational leadership/higher education administration from ODU, and a graduate certificate in technology and communication from the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill. In his spare time, Mayo enjoys the occasional good cup of coffee or tea.

Dr. Katie Gaines
Pennsylvania State University-World Campus
Katie Gaines is an academic adviser and liaison with Penn State World Campus Academic Advising & Student Disability Services, currently working with students and academic partners in the College of Health and Human Development. In her role, she works with distance learners, many of whom are also adult learners, and has focused on innovative efforts for new and at-risk student populations. She has also been involved in supervising student-facing administrative staff and helping to guide communication and outreach efforts to students. She grew up in New Jersey and completed a B.S. in Horticulture and a Ph.D. in Ecology, both from Penn State. She decided to pursue a career in academic advising while in graduate school, as a result of having meaningful experiences with mentoring undergraduate students.

Jaclyn Graves
Temple University
Jackie Graves has been an Academic Advisor in the University Honors Program at Temple University since 2016. She has been a member of the Temple University family since 2013, working previously as an Advisor in the Fox School of Business and currently as an Adjunct Professor in the College of Education. Prior to becoming a Temple Owl, Jackie was a Scarlet Raptor during her time earning her B.A. in Psychology from Rutgers University – Camden and a Phoenix during her time working as an Advisor at the University of Phoenix and earning her M.S. in Psychology. She currently resides blissfully in South Jersey with her wife, twin girls, and 4 (yes, 4) dogs.

Carla Harrell
Old Dominion University
Carla Harrell, Master Lecturer for the Department of Communication and Theatre Arts, has served as Chief Departmental Advisor since 2007. The Communication Department houses approximately 800 majors and minors; she personally advises close to 400 of those students. Her role on various committees on campus aids in effective advising since she has her finger on the pulse of University policy changes, course offerings beyond the Communication department, and support services and extra-curricular opportunities that may enrich student experiences. Through involvement with the Old Dominion Advising Network’s (ODAN) workshops and brown bag lunch talks, she is able to stay abreast of issues and ODU specific policies as well as trends relevant to university advising in general. Her favorite aspect of advising is seeing a student’s academic journey through to completion and working with that student to craft an individualized approach to their major and their overall experience at ODU.
Region 2 Outstanding Advising Advocate
Dr. Robert Schreyer
Mercer County Community College
Dr. Schreyer currently serves as the Assistant Vice President of Academic Operations at Mercer Community College where he oversees all aspects of Academic operations and works collaboratively with the Deans in each area of the Academic Affairs division to ensure administrators, faculty and staff are able to meet the mission of the college to ensure student success. In his previous role as Dean of the School of Health Professions he had oversight of all health related programs including Allied Health programs and Health & Exercise Science programs. Prior to joining MCCC he was a professor in the Doctoral Physical Therapy Program at Touro College, where he has taught Human Anatomy, Neurological Rehabilitation, Prosthetics and Orthotics. He has also taught in the Physical Therapy Programs at Columbia University and Hunter College. He has held leadership positions at both Healthcare and Academic Institutions.
Dr. Schreyer is a leading authority on Physical Therapy treatments for patients with neurological conditions, including Multiple Sclerosis, Parkinson’s disease, strokes and other brain traumas. He is also a specialist in treating patients with spinal cord injuries, amputation-related conditions and a host of orthopedic injuries. Known around the globe as an expert in Neurological physical therapy, Rob has written the definitive chapter on PT and Multiple Sclerosis in Physical Rehabilitation, the leading PT textbook.
Dr. Schreyer received his Doctorate of Physical Therapy at New York University and his B.S. in Exercise Science at Rutgers University.

Jonathan May
George Mason University
Jon May is Associate Director of Center for Academic Advising, Retention, and Transitions at George Mason University. He has 18 years of experience in higher education, including academic advising, teaching UNIV transition courses, and development of initiatives that support the growth of George Mason University Korea.
During the past seven years, Jon has used his knowledge, resources, and extensive network of advising colleagues within NACADA to play an instrumental role in helping to develop institutional organizations and initiatives such as the Mason Academic Advisor Network, as well as the creation of the Advisor Mentor Program which is now supporting its fourth cohort of advisors at Mason.
Personally, one of Jon’s greatest enjoyments is be interviewed by individuals new to the field of academic advising as well as consulting and mentoring those individuals looking to make a career change by breaking into the field of academic advising. Jon’s passion for advising is driven by his role in supporting students throughout their academic careers, and being able to given back to NACADA in ways that NACADA supported him during the early years of his career.

Amanda Thompson
Delaware Technical Community College
Amanda has served in several roles at Delaware Tech since 2014 including Administrative Assistant through the Office of Instruction, Adjunct, and most recently as a Senior Student Affairs Program Specialist and International Student Coordinator. She also completed her master’s in school counseling internship as an Advisor through our Academic Advising Center.
In Amanda’s newest role at the College, she has assisted with several restructuring project including, but not limited to, revamping the Admissions process, reframing the International Students department, and collaborating with Recruitment to expand outreach to our K-12 partners and students. Amanda supervises front line staff in both Admissions and Registration and helps make sure the College is up to date in how students take first steps toward beginning their experience. Amanda also showed she was not afraid of data when she assisted with the implementation of Banner 9 to better facilitate advising and registration.
Amanda joined NACADA last year and became involved right away. She served on the NACADA Region 2 Planning Committee. She was an integral part of the team and helped ensure that all attendees had a valuable learning experience. Amanda has also volunteered to be the Co-Chair for the 2019 Delaware NACADA Drive-In.

Gavin J. Farber
Temple University
Gavin Farber has worked in higher education for over ten years beginning as undergraduate orientation leader through to his current role as an academic advisor. His journey began at Rowan University as a journalism major. However, his career aspirations shifted at the end of his sophomore year to a career in higher education after completing an internship in the central advising center. After completing his undergraduate degree, he moved into the Master of Arts in Higher Education program at Rowan where we worked a Graduate Assistant for the Vice President for Student Affairs. He assisting administrators on special projects relating to student enrichment, parent & family programming, sophomore success and leadership development.
Gavin began his professional career at Temple University in November 2011. He has remained at the Fox School of Business and Management’s Center for Undergraduate Advising for the last seven years. Currently a member of the Freshman/Sophomore Advising Team, Gavin assists these students acclimate to the university environment. He has developed workshops to engage students on academic planning, career development, study abroad, stress & time management and student financial services. His other specialty areas include teaching seminar courses for undeclared and exploratory business students to assist in their major and career development and serves as the retention coordinator for his advising center. Gavin is the Chairperson of the Temple University Advisor Mentoring Program through the institution’s Academic Advisor Group where he has served in this roll over the last three years.
He joined NACADA in 2012 and has remained and active member at all levels of the association. Gavin is the current Region 2 Mentoring and Membership Coordinator and member of the Advisor Training & Development Advising Community. In the last year, Gavin has presented on mentoring at local, regional, annual and international NACADA conferences to discuss the impact of the #NoMenteeLeftBehind movement within Region 2.
